Yes, Palm Sunday has is a curious kind of joy. In the Bible reading you can sense the joy of the day. Jesus sets it all up so carefully, then rides along as people throw garments in his path. So enthusiastic and worshipful! What Luke calls "the whole multitude of the disciples" starts shouting out joyful praise as Jesus comes down from the Mount of Olives. After chapters of journeying to Jerusalem, here he is. The one who does deeds of power—here he is. The Son of God, the great forgiver, the healer of souls—here he is. When Jesus enters the holy city, there is gladness.

When Jesus enters our hearts and lives, there is great joy.

Now I am by nature a taciturn, rather serious kind of person, yet recently joy has been ganging up on me from all directions. I think they believed me! As a concluding exercise everyone took a blank card and wrote on it a daily affirmation, whatever they most need to remind themselves of every day.

"The Promise Only Jesus Could Make" with Katie Edwards

I set my card down and asked God to give me the words for my card. Story after story. And what else was there to do but praise God joyfully for all those deeds of power? Then this weekend my daughter starred in the school musical; she sang and acted her heart out up there. And here it is again in the gospel today. Jesus enters, and the response is joy and praise.

Not that everyone rejoiced. The Pharisees, you remember, told Jesus to make the disciples stop. Too much noise, too much enthusiasm, just too much for them. Maybe they were afraid that in hailing Jesus as king, the disciples might provoke the Romans to violence and everyone would get hurt. There are always reasons to silence joy. We manage to silence our own selves pretty effectively. When was the last time you shouted Hosanna to Jesus in public?

Heck, when was the last time you shouted praise to Jesus anywhere? Have you ever noticed how a lack of joy negatively impacts your ability to serve the Lord? And to collaborate with those you serve with?

It's a Wonderful Life

Recently, while reading through the first two chapters of Philippians, several attributes of Paul and those he served with stood out to me as qualities that contribute to joy on a ministry team. Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:—Philippians Paul and Timothy were laboring together on behalf of the church, and it brought joy to both of them.

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:—Philippians People are attracted to vision and to confidence in achieving that vision. Do you believe that God can do anything but fail? Express it to others. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;—Philippians — It is interesting to me that Paul not only wanted the church at Philippi to have discernment, but he wanted their discernment to grow.

It takes time to develop discernment in each stage of life, and it takes humility to be teachable to those who point out a lapse in your discernment.
